Farewell address as SPD chairman at the extra-ordinary party convention in Bonn, 14 June 1987

Die Freiheit für viele, nicht nur für die wenigen. Freiheit des Gewissens und der Meinung. Auch Freiheit von Not und Furch. SO stand es zu einem früheren Zeitpunkt des Zweiten Weltkrieges übrigens in der Atlantik-Charta, die ich damals nicht nur als ein Instrument der psychologischen Kriegführung verstehen wollte. After 23 years at the head of the SPD, Willy Brandt says farewell to his party friends on 14 June 1987 with an impressive speech. In it he takes stock of his political influence and stresses how much the fundamental value of freedom means to him. At the same time, Brandt admonishes the SPD to be open for societal changes and to constantly renew itself. The delegates name him honorary chairman of the party.
