Trips 1967–1974
Upon assuming the office of Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic of Germany on 1 December 1966, foreign trips become an essential part of work for Willy Brandt. Mostly they involve meetings with his closest allies, the USA, Great Britain and France and also with other partners in the framework of NATO and the European Community. New destinations in South America, Africa and Asia are also included in his travel programme.
During his term as Chancellor from 1969 to 1974, Willy Brandt continues to make frequent trips to Washington, London and Paris. In the course of pursuing his new Ostpolitik, he travels for the first time to the GDR and the Soviet Union. Brandt also pays state visits to Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Israel. He almost always spends his summer holidays with his family in Norway. There are as well the numerous trips which Brandt undertakes as Chancellor or as SPD chairman within the Federal Republic and to West Berlin. However, those are not listed here.
